Dressings & Sauces
If I had to pick one recipe group that I think a home cook should master, this would be it. Creating a tasty dressing or sauce does NOT have to be hard, but it WILL be a game changer. With no judgment on how you roll whatsoever, I have not bought a bottled dressing in decades. It is possibly because I was in charge of vinaigrettes in every single kitchen I worked in during my year in France. I mastered variety: creamy, herby, EVOO & acid, spicy, juice-based and more. And then there were all those make-ahead dressings that were part of every catering job – made by the gallon, again and again.
One of the simplest things you can do is mix equal parts fresh lemon juice and good quality olive oil. Basic, fresh, clean. You can add Dijon, or herbs, or spices, but it will totally elevate your salad with just those two ingredients. Or throw things in a blender and get this creamy avocado dressing. This zippy salsa verde can be a game changer for all kinds of dishes, and I have included a long list of the ways you might use it. Or take this mango habanero BBQ sauce and add it to your grilled cheese. Curried avo dressing? Creamy Caesar? Check and check. And this recipe for a garlicy Panzanella salad dressing was inspired by famous chefs from London who I styled for on the Today Show. This version is just as tasty and so much simpler. Dive deep into these recipes and change up mealtime.
Spiced Cranberry Ginger Kumquat Chutney
Thanks to Frontier Co-op for Sponsoring This Post! Nothing screams holidays like cranberries, citrus and spice. Mulled wine, orange pomanders (that’s fancy talk for oranges poked full of cloves), and cranberry garlands. So imagine my delight when the good people...
Hungry for More? Turkey Tetrazzini – The Let’s-Keep-This-Party-Rolling Leftover Fave
Are you full yet? I know. I know. The mind reels that we are still talking about food. But trust me - this dish does not disappoint. And, be honest. Turkey sandwiches start to feel redundant. Turkey Tetrazzini, a dish I grew up on, however is creamy, hearty, and...
Thanksgiving Essentials: Roast Turkey Perfection and Gimme-More Gravy
Nary has a Thanksgiving rolled by that I am not peppered with queries from dawn to dusk. I heed the call, alternating with “Gobble Gobble” and “Butterball Hotline.” This year, I say bring it on. I’ve got nothing but time. Yup! I have already cooked my...
My Big Fat Greek Salad
I created this salad earlier this summer – in part because it is so tasty (of course), and in part because it is a starch that is hearty and filling without being potato salad. Yawn. Plus that whole mayo aversion thing I got going. It made its first appearance at...
Rustic Tuscan Panzanella Bread Salad: Best-Ever Bread Salad with Peak of the Season Tomatoes
This time of year when the tomatoes are hanging ripe and juicy, heavy on the vine I am often reminded of two lively ladies from London whom I met styling Panzanella Bread Salad at the Today Show for their River Café Cookbook. Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers set up shop...
